Rush Hour #8: Transfigured
Arnold Schoenberg Verklärte Nacht
Camille Saint-Saëns Symphony No.2
Karin Hendrickson conductor

Written on the eve of the 20th century, Schoenberg’s ultra-Romantic Transfigured Night uses the shimmering tones of a string orchestra to conjure a moonlit setting for a tale of emotional transformation. As a couple walk through a cold, barren grove one night, feelings change from despair to hope, from grief to joy, through an act of love and acceptance. The music similarly transforms from resignation and agitation to a hymn-like climax, rich in tenderness and compassion.
