Youthful talent shines bright in music by Bizet and Weber, providing a fitting starting point for our 2019 fellowship’s first performance. Both written by teenage hands, hints of Carmen are already present in Bizet’s symphony while Weber’s overture starts a dramatic story of love and family torn apart by revolution.
Gabriela Lena Frank looks back on a childhood filled with Oriental stir-fry, Andean nursery songs and music lessons that spanned Peruvian folk music to Bach minuets, creating music that both explores and celebrates multiculturalism. Folk music from America inspired Crawford Seeger’s whirling Rissolty Rossolty, with three tunes colliding in what feels like one great orchestral jam.
