Anna began learning the viola at the age of ten, after starting on the violin three years earlier. Anna’s studies began with Robert Turrell in the Junior Department of the Royal Academy of Music, before continuing with Jonathan Barritt and Simon Rowland-Jones at the Royal College of Music (RCM).

Whilst at the RCM, Anna enjoyed exploring a range of chamber and orchestral music. Regularly Principal Viola in the RCM Symphony Orchestra, Anna had the opportunity to perform under inspirational conductors including Vladimir Ashkenazy, Edward Gardner, Bernard Haitink and Vladimir Jurowski. Anna was selected for the Royal College of Music and English National Opera Evolve Scheme, which gives students the opportunity to play alongside the orchestra of English National Opera.

After completing her undergraduate studies in 2013, Anna had a desire to experience life outside the music world. She therefore made the decision to try something different and for two years was a trainee at Suffolk County Council, completing a foundation degree in River and Coastal Engineering. It was through stepping away from music that Anna was able to truly discover its importance. She is excited to be returning to music and eager for the opportunity to once again play and share music with others.

QUICKFIRE QUESTIONS

What or who inspired you to become a professional musician?
During my time experiencing life outside music I switched on the radio one evening after work. The music playing was the third movement of Rachmaninov Symphony No.2, and the beauty of it really got to me. I think it was at this moment that I realised what I had left behind and knew that I had to try and find a way back into music.

Tell us something about yourself that might surprise us
When I was little my ambition in life was to be a post lady. The inspiration came from Postman Pat – he does lead a very idyllic life!
