Georgia is a freelance violinist and teacher based in London. An experienced orchestral musician, she has performed in many of the UK’s most prestigious concert halls under the baton of such world-class conductors as Semyon Bychkov, Edward Gardner and Sir Mark Elder.
Georgia studied with Professor Sophie Langdon at the Royal Academy of Music, where she completed her master’s with distinction and was awarded the DipRAM for an outstanding final recital. Georgia has since enjoyed a successful professional career with orchestras across London, including London Sinfonietta and the Orion Orchestra.
As a chamber musician, Georgia led the Melanson Quartet, who were Davey-Posnanski Scheme participants 2014-15 and received a High Commendation at the Wolfe Wolfinsohn String Quartet Prize.
Georgia’s interest in 20th century and contemporary music also inspired her involvement with the London Sinfonietta Academy Ensemble 2016 and Shadwell’s Opera 2016 productions of Schoenberg’s Erwartung and Turnage’s Twice Through The Heart. Georgia continues to be fascinated with music and in making music with others.
What do you love about classical music?
I love the immersive and intensely moving nature of classical music. Its familiarity, yet continuous ingenuity and diversity is a constant source of enjoyment for me, and to be able to be involved as my job is so thrilling. Every experience I have with this music is different and exciting, from performing a piece for the first time to even teaching children a piece of music that I am passionate about. Speaking specifically about orchestral music, for me being in the middle of this amazing sound – there is no other feeling like it in the world. I am more alive than at any other time.
What’s on your playlist right now?
Fleetwood Mac, Frank Sinatra, Simon and Garfunkel, Nat King Cole and Louis Armstrong. Just been given a vinyl player for Christmas!
What is your favourite piece of music, and why do you love it?
I can’t really say what my favourite piece is, as I’ve never been able to single it down to one, but certainly flavour of the moment is the Korngold Violin Concerto. It’s just so gorgeous, romantic and slushy but at the same time has a very modern and complex tone to it. Regardless of the fact that I will be playing it in the new year, I have a special place in my heart for this piece, and it really suits my playing style.
What do you do with your time when you’re not playing music?
When I am not playing, I am usually teaching. I love it and constantly learn something new from the several hilarious students I look forward to seeing each week. It is both an exhausting and wonderfully fulfilling job. Aside from my work, I cook, eat, spend time with friends, knit and occasionally kayak!
