Rush Hour Concert and Livestream #6: Landscapes
Ralph Vaughan Williams Serenade in A
Thea Musgrave Green
Michael Nyman Strong on Oaks, Strong on the Causes of Oaks
Olivia Clarke Conductor

A trio of British composers discovering their musical landscapes sets the scene for this nature-inspired programme by our fellowship.

A 25-year old Vaughan Williams composed his Serenade in A, which was his first major work for orchestra. Laden with his trademark folk-inspired melodies, this piece takes you to the bright British countryside.

The "freshness of youth" and "the plant life in our world in which we all depend" sits at the heart of Thea Musgrave's Green. A fresh perspective of how conflict can be managed is heard through opposing themes and voices heard within the orchestra.

Michael Nyman's 1998 Strong on Oaks, Strong on the Causes of Oaks is a dynamic, rhythmic-driven political satire, with its name deriving from New Labour's election tagline. Swapping crime for ancient trees, this five-movement work is rich in textures and strong in its point of view.

English National Opera's Assistant Conductor, Olivia Clarke stands at the helm of the Southbank Sinfonia for this fruitful concert.

With grateful thanks to the Vaughan Williams Charitable Trust and PRS Resonate for their support of this concert
