Music Director’s Appeal 2020

33 outstanding graduates from across the globe came together in February to form Southbank Sinfonia 2020.

They made an extremely impressive start and embarked on our intense programme of performances and workshops with great enthusiasm. But then everything changed, many returned to their home countries, and we had to adapt very quickly to a new and uncertain way of life without live music.

We are in touch with all of the musicians and, while they may not be with us in person, they remain our Fellows and we are strongly committed to supporting them in these difficult times. To this end, we’re putting as much activity as possible online to keep us all connected and make the most of the opportunities that arise. Examples so far include:

  • finding new ways to create music together
  • a virtual version of the scheduled May Family Concert
  • social media training based around isolation projects
  • virtual seminars on Peak Performance Training
  • regular webinars with leading industry professionals, including representatives from Manchester Camerata, City of London Sinfonia, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and Paraorchestra).
  • CV writing training and feedback
  • regular personal contact to help the players deal with the continuing challenges of the situation

We hope to reschedule as many of our suspended concerts as possible but the costs of repeating and adding projects exceed our budget and we are making substantial financial losses on cancelled performances (in fees from our partners, ticket sales, grants and donations). We continue to make plans for the autumn, but face great uncertainty for the whole year and into the next.

So we need your support. Together we can still make Southbank Sinfonia 2020 an inspiring and beneficial year for all involved.

Thank you,
