Biography

Music has always been a big part of my life, even from really early on. Piano is what got me started and I loved it. My passion for music grew quickly and soon it was recommended that I attend a music specialist programme and pick a string instrument - cello was my number one choice. Then, when I was 13, my parents sponsored me to go to the USA where I began performance training at Walnut Hill School for the Arts in Boston. When I was 17, I graduated with a double major in cello and piano performance. Even today I still like to relax playing some of my favourite piano compositions.

Then, when I was 13, my parents sponsored me to go to the USA where I began performance training at Walnut Hill School for the Arts in Boston. I made a bold choice when I was 18 to come to the UK and study with renowned British cellist Richard Lester at the Royal College of Music. Personally, it was a brave choice as I was giving up all of my friends and connections, but I believe it was the right one as there is so much more I can do here as a musician.

My studies hit a major obstacle a few years ago as the tsunami of the financial crisis crashed into Taiwan and traumatised my family’s business. As a result, my financial backing took a turn for the worse. I took this opportunity to learn about fundraising and through the help of friends I was able to put together campaigns that ultimately paid for the remainder of my undergraduate degree. Working hard to win sponsorships, awards and scholarships to pay for all of my studies has been one of my biggest achievements. In September 2017, I joined Trinity Laban’s master’s programme with a fully funded placement, under the Derek Butler Award, the Tillet Trust and the Drake Caleja Trust.

Currently, I play on a cello crafted by the Klotz family from the late 18th century, generously supported by Professor Derek Aviss OBE.
