Biography

Originally from Hampshire, Avril is currently studying for her MA at the Royal Academy of Music with Sophie Langdon. She gained a music scholarship for sixth form study at King Edward VI School, Southampton, before going on to the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester studying violin with Thelma Handy, Leader of the RLPO, and graduating in 2012 with a BMus Honours Degree and an LRSM with Distinction.

A former member of the National Youth Orchestra, Avril is a passionate orchestral player and has worked with many orchestras across the country including playing first violin with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. Her performing experience is wider and varied, with recent work including having played in the premiere of the 8th Fold, a musical staged at the Duchess Theatre. 

In addition, Avril also has a keen interest in orchestral outreach. She has worked closely with the BBC Philharmonic and Hallé outreach departments on many projects involving pre-concert talks and various workshops with children and families. Alongside this, she teaches in both the junior and senior departments at the Abbey School, Reading.


QUICKFIRE QUESTIONS

If you could play another instrument, what would it be and why?
A percussionist – I’d love to be able to play a range of instruments in big orchestral piece.
