Showing an interest in music from an early age, Caleb joined Chetham’s School of Music, Manchester at the age of nine. Caleb is currently a postgraduate student at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, under the tutelage of renowned violist Rivka Golani. Whilst at Trinity, Caleb has won a number of prizes, including the Classical Concerto Prize, the Band/Kurtz Award for Viola, and the City Livery Club Music Award.
Caleb leads an active musical life as an orchestral violist, chamber musician, soloist and teacher, regularly performing with a number of freelance orchestras based in London, and throughout the UK. Caleb has been fortunate enough to premiere numerous contemporary works for viola, most recently recording Daryl Runwick’s Viola Sonata with pianist Aleks Szram.
Caleb is passionate about music education and currently enjoys teaching at a central London boys’ school.
What do you love about classical music?
The unbelievably wide variety of feelings it can convey. I continually come across music that excites and fascinates, each time in a totally unique and engrossing way. Also, the way in which a piece of music, perhaps written over 300 hundred years ago, can reveal something completely new to me about the way I feel.
Which three people, living or dead, would you most like to have dinner with and why?
Robert Hughes, the Australian art critic. Hughes was hugely knowledgeable about art and culture in general. One of my favourite writers.
Danny Blanchflower, the legendary Spurs captain, during their most successful era – he was also particularly eloquent and therefore an ideal dinner guest!
Bernstein, an amazingly versatile musician and a fascinating character.
What is your most embarrassing or amusing musical moment?
I once performed in a piece of devised theatre, in which, as part of a horror story, I had to appear as a possessed violist! As if this was not enough, I was required to play lying down!!!
